Fifteen-year-old Japanese girl Chise Hatori is put up for auction for 5 million pounds by a tall, masked gentleman. Abandoned as a child and ridiculed by her classmates for her unconventional behavior, she was prepared to surrender herself to any buyer, as long as she had a home to return to. Chained and bound to an unknown fate, she hears the whispers of well-dressed men along the way. They are gossiping and complaining about the incredible bargain the buyer has struck.
Ignoring the whispers, the mysterious man leads the girl to his study, where he introduces himself as Elias Ainsworth. After a brief encounter and a magical teleportation, they awaken in Elias's charming cottage in the English countryside. Welcomed by fairies and surrounded by strange creatures, Chise's story begins as she becomes "The Thing," the apprentice and bride of an ancient sorcerer.
